Youth Baton Relay visits Jaipur

Jaipur, August 22nd, 2008: The Youth Baton Relay (YBR) which was flagged off from Delhi on 1st of August 2008 visited Jaipur city today.

The Baton entered Rajasthan on the 21st of August 2008, traveling across 4 states, 36 cities and towns, covering a distance of over 2,000 kilometers. The Relay saw over 1,200 sportspersons of International and National repute participate in the Relay as Baton Bearers.

The Relay will proceed from Jaipur to Ajmer, Udaipur and then enter into Gujarat on its way to Pune. The Youth Baton Relay will travel through 9 states, 199 cities, towns and villages covering a distance of over 8000 kilometers with over 7,000 Volunteers who will help the Baton’s journey.

As part of the “Green Games” initiative the Youth Baton relay will collect water from every city on route. All the 71 participating CGA countries will also get water from their respective counties. This water will be used at the Opening Ceremony to create a spectacular ‘Fountain of Youth’. A ‘Garden of Youth’ will be created with the saplings brought in by the athletes from 71 participating nations at the Shri Shiv Chhartapati Sports City, Balewadi as a legacy of the Relay for years to come.

The Relay will run in support of ‘Save the Tiger’ campaign in association with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and will visit Sariska, Borivilli, Tadoba, Pench and Melghat Wildlife Reserves on route.

Tata Motors is the official Vehicle Provider to the Youth Baton relay. 23 Tata Motors vehicles, including Sumo Grande, Safari, Winger, Magic, 207 DI, and 407 SS, will accompany the entourage. One of the vehicles provided by Tata Motors has been developed as a 'Special Green Vehicle' (SFC 407) that will continuously collect refuse from the relay. This will be processed into manure to be used for planting saplings on the route.

Hindustan Petroleum is the official partner and Air India is the International Airlines Partner for the Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008. Kinley Water is the official beverage for the Youth Baton Relay.
