Mumbai celebrates Youth Baton Relay at Gateway of India

7th September 2008: Today, the Youth Baton Relay reached the Gateway of India to a grand reception in order to undertake the sea journey to Uran. The dignitaries and crowd were welcomed with dance performances representing the rich culture of Mahrashtra.

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP & Chairman, Organising Committee, CYG Pune 2008 and CWG Delhi 2010 along with Mr. Suresh Shetty, Minister of Tourism, Rear Admiral SPS Cheema AVSM, NM, Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, Mr. Dhanraj Pillai, renowned international hockey player and Arjuna Awardees were present on the occasion to welcome the Baton. Rahul Bose, renowned actor and sportsperson, carried the Baton through to the awaiting crowd at the Gateway of India. Rahul Bose then handed the baton to Mr. Kalmadi who in turn handed the baton to Arjuna Awardee Shailesh Khilaje. Mr. Kalmadi also facilitated the Arjuna Awardees and the guests present with the replica of Baton as a memento.

With the support of the Indian Navy, the Relay swam 7 nautical miles from Gateway of India to Uran which saw participation by more than 100 swimmers drawn from various districts namely Kolhapur, Nashik, Thane, Pune, Mumbai and Raigadh, lead by Arjuna Awardee Shailesh Khilaje. Mr. Kalmadi welcomed the baton and thanked the people of Mumbai for their enthusiasm and involvement in the relay.

The Baton entered Maharashtra on the 3rd of September 2008. Passing through Talasari/Thane it entered Mumbai on the 5th of September. On 6th September, the Youth Baton Relay started from Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali and headed towards Mumbai city covering Kandivili and Goregoan, Andheri, Bandra, Shivaji Park, August Kranti Maidan, VT Station and ending at Mumbai University. After completing Goregoan, the Baton proceeded to Andheri Sports Complex where actor Parmeet Sethi, International Footballer Godfrey Pereira, National Athletes Cyril D’souza and Colin Santos participated along with other Baton Bearers in the Andheri leg of the relay.En route the Baton was also carried by roller skaters and cyclists. After the water collecting ceremony, Commissioner Mr. Jairaj Pathak ran with the Baton and then handed it over to the coolies. The famous Mumbai Dabbawalas also participated in the relay which ended at Mumbai University.
